Carousels

Carousels can provide extremely attractive savings in floor space, increased inventory accuracy and reduction in errors, and picking productivity. Floor space is reduced with the high cube utilization of carousels, allowing the same amount of product to be stocked in as little as one-eight the area freeing up valuable space that can be turned into more profitable uses. Productivity is achieved when the carousel brings the product to the picker instead of the picker having to walk or travel to the product. Picking productivity can be increased up to 20 times over conventional picking methods, with rates up to 300-500 lines per operator per hour. The following are some of the different uses of carousels:

  • Order Picking - excellent for broken case picking, used by general merchandise wholesalers, service parts distribution, mail order fulfillment operations, electronic parts distribution, and hundreds more
  • Manufacturing - used in kitting operations, tool room and maintenance parts storage, and in progressive assembly operations
  • Records Storage and Retrieval - an excellent solution for high density storage of records, x-rays, media, etc.

Carousels are generally classified into three categories:

  • Horizontal Carousels - typically long in length and made up of several carousels, these systems rotate the bins forward to an operator for picking or stocking using a computer-based software system that maximizes pick rates. These systems can also be stacked, allowing better utilization of overhead warehouse space.
  • Vertical Carousels - these systems are generally narrow and high, reaching heights of over 40' and the bins rotate in a vertical fashion. These systems are driven by a computer-based software package that reduces dwell time and can incorporate kitting requirements to present the operator all the necessary items for a manufacturing or assembly process. This type of carousel is also used for storage and retrieval of roll material such as carpet, vinyl, or fabric, allowing material to be cut to order as required.
  • Power Columns - instead of rotating trays, this type of carousel uses fixed shelves with an automated device to place and retrieve trays of material within a vertical structure. It has the same floor space saving benefits of Vertical Carousels, but offers the density and accessibility of a horizontal carousel. Larger and heavier items can be stored in a Power Column that typically found in a Vertical Carousel. The most common uses are in parts storage for manufacturing or maintenance facilities, tool rooms, work-in-process storage and parts staging.
